Back UP your pictures! | Calgary Family Photographer

Deaglan and I were at the park one day to meet one of his little friends and her mom. Within moments it became very apparent that Mom  was very upset and, as a mother, i was VERY saddened when i heard her story. Golnaz’s Mom explained that her hard drive had crashed and that she had lost ALL pictures of Golnaz (from birth until age two!!). Having printed only a few pictures she had lost pretty much everything. I quickly began to tell her about the miracles of hard drive recovery, which clearly did not make her feel any better… Golnaz’s mom had visited several companies and spent  a SIGNIFICANT amount of money trying to recover her files. Needless to say she didn’t have any luck.

I felt so sad thinking about the possibility of losing the memories of my babies and i immediately offered to take some pictures – i just wanted to do something (she had NO IDEA that i was a photographer). SO here are a few of the pictures that were taken in her back garden and during our walk to the park… Little Golnaz asked me for some pictures in her favourite princess dress! Some time later I would photograph her 3rd birthday and hopefully i will get those up soon (we also have a family shoot scheduled for the new year).

This story has prompted me to send folks a friendly holiday reminder to BACKUP your pictures. Everyone should have two copies of all files AT ALL times. Don’t burn to CD or leave files on memory cards, these types of storage are even more likely to fail than a hard drive. Personally, i keep three copies of all files – one with an online service, and two on external hard drives. This time of year we take extra pictures and can always ask Santa for that extra hard drive. Alternatively, you can get some space on icloud or one of the many other online services. If you ever have any questions about how to best back up your memories please feel free to drop me a note (i’ll be HAPPY to help).
